Generally speaking, it’s what happens at the club—not the club itself—that determines how much fun you’ll have while out for a night on the tiles. The city is full of great events, but we’ve culled it down to five to make it easy for you.
- Body & Soul
New York veterans Joe Claussell, François K and Danny Krivit pack the massive dance floor of Webster Hall’s main room with deep and soulful house, classics, Afro-Latin rhythms and anything else they feel like at their ever popular monthly Sunday tea dance. Webster Hall, 125 E 11th St between Third and Fourth Aves (212-353-1600) - 718 Sessions
If soulful disco and R&B-based house are Gotham’s gift to the dance-music universe, then Danny Krivit is the city’s top Santa Claus. It doesn’t matter that the party bounces from venue to venue: Wherever it ends up, it’s one of the best shindigs in town. Santos Party House, 100 Lafayette St at Walker St (212-714-4646) - Warm Up at P.S.1
We can remember going to P.S.1’s summertime parties in the ’90s, when somebody would be deejaying to a few hundred people. Now, upwards of 5,000 revelers show up weekly to hear artists ranging from techno titan Matthew Dear to No Wave scion James Chance in increasingly imaginative surroundings. The last few years have transformed the courtyard into an urban farm and an urban beach. P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, 22-25 Jackson Ave at 46th Ave, Long Island City, Queens (718-784-2084) - Turntables on the Hudson
Celebrating it’s 10-year anniversary last year, TOTH mixes funky, eclectic music from resident DJs Nickodemus and Mariano with live percussion courtesy of Nappy G. They’re regularly joined by world famous DJs looking to get in on the fun. Various venues, see Deep Space at Cielo
Dance-music deity François K is behind this great affair, focusing on dub in all its glorious, echo-drenched forms (vintage Jamaican, modern and what he calls “outer-planetary”). Cielo, 18 Little W 12th St between Ninth Ave and Washington St (212-645-5700, cieloclub.com)
