Great parties don’t just grow on trees, though it would be really cool if they did. Nope a slammin’ soiree requires a lot of hard work, and here’s the best party-throwing individuals and organizations in the city.
- Susanne Bartsch
The ultimate party promoter of the late 1980s and early ’90s was Susanne Bartsch, whose circuslike events were the pinnacle of that era’s glittering nightlife. Always clad in outlandish outfits, she merrily served as the ringmaster of a colorful array of club kids, drag queens, voguers and Eurotrash. She made a welcome return in 2006 and hosts Vandam Sundays at Greenhouse. Greenhouse, 150 Varick St at Vandam St (212-807-7000) - Giant Step
Starting out at S.O.B.’s in 1990, Giant Step plays jazzy, funky music from all over the map to an unpretentious crowd who come to dance. Their parties can be anywhere at anytime so keep checking their website to keep up. - Made Event
Made co-founders Mike Bindra and Laura De Palma are all over the city and any electronic music style. One minute their hosting huge summer gigs like Armin van Buuren at McCarren Pool, the next it’s extreme, endurance clubbing at Sunday School for Degenerates, and the next their introducing Berlin’s techno-rati to NYC. - Sleepy & Boo
Their Basic NYC bashes have been rocking the Sullivan Room for four years with solid, straight-up jacking house. Their nights host some damn fine spinners who get overlooked by the megaclubs, New York’s clubbers would be worse off without them. Sullivan Room, 218 Sullivan St between Bleecker and W 3rd Sts (212-252-2151) - Dance.Here.Now.
If you long to see big-name DJs without the big crowds, the mid-week parties by Benny Soto and Rob Fernandez in the 300-person capacity Cielo were made for you. Cielo, 18 Little W 12th St between Ninth Ave and Washington St (212-645-5700, cieloclub.com)
