    DJ Rekha Presents Basement Bhangra

    Various artists (Koch Records)

It’s no substitute for attending the Basement Bhangra bash itself, but resident DJ Rekha’s debut mix-CD provides a good idea of the funked-up action that takes place at the long-running affair. Melding the percussion-heavy South Asian sound of traditional bhangra with the Western sounds of hip-hop and (especially) dancehall, the mix hits the ground running from opening track “Basement Bhangra Anthem” (featuring a stellar contribution from the Queens-based Punjabi vocalist Bikram Singh) and doesn’t let the dhol-drenched energy level waver. That’s no small feat for a sound that rarely tops 110bpm.

The Basement Bhangra Record-Release Party is Tue 23.
