New York's best
The best bookstores in NYC
- 192 Books
This bright bookshop—located just east of the Chelsea gallery area—hosts excellent readings and features a good selection of fiction, art books and literature in translation. 192 Tenth Ave between 21st and 22nd Sts (212-255-4022, 192books.com) - The Strand
Hands down the best place to find cheap paperbacks and out-of-print gems—often for far less than you can buy them at firsthand shops. 828 Broadway at 12th St (212-473-1452, strandbooks.com) - St. Mark's Bookshop
Its devotion to classic and cutting-edge books remains unequaled. 31 Third Ave between 8th and 9th Sts (212-260-7853) - McNally Jackson
This Soho shop welcomes eminent writers, and is well stocked with highbrow fiction and internationally diverse books. 52 Prince St between Lafayette and Mulberry Sts (212-274-1160, mcnallyjackson.com) - Printed Matter
Located across the street from 192 Books, this flyer-decorated store specializes in art books of all stripes, from stapled zines to beautifully designed monographs. 195 Tenth Ave at 22nd St (212-925-0325, printedmatter.com)
Sorry, I still mourn the loss (and loss again) of Coliseum Books. On 57th Street, then on 42nd. But Barnes and Noble on 5th Avenue at 17th street keeps me amused.
192 has wonderful author readings. Very cozy and up close. It's a lovely store.
I love The Strand :)
