Dance (without jazz hands)
Don Hill’s
The former MisShapes-associated bar is still going strong with the equally satisfying Rated X party (held the third Saturday of every month), which attracts a mix of glam, goth and indie rockers ready to dance to new wave, electro and disco. Win $100 in the 2am Hot Body Contest, then blow it all (the cash and the body) on $4 PBRs. 511 Greenwich St between Spring and Vandam Sts (212-219-2850, donhills.com). Average drink: $7.
Studio B
Now that it has a cabaret license, the multilevel club can do what it does best, catering to two get-down crowds: hipster electro-music aficionados, and the Eastern Europeans that frequented the place pregentrification. Check out the website calendar before you go or you might find yourself in a culture clash right out of West Side Story. 259 Banker St between Calyer St and Meserole Ave, Greenpoint, Brooklyn (718-389-1880, clubstudiob.com). Average drink: $7.
205
Uptown and downtown kids gyrate to electrohouse on the lower level and indie pop and Motown upstairs, creating a sweaty haze and beats-induced heat at this dance destination, which features aluminum wallpaper, a bar made entirely of vintage filing cabinets, and Warhol-esque Pop Art. 205 Chrystie St at Stanton St (212-505-2543, myspace.com/205club). Average drink: $10.
Sway
At this intimate Moroccan-themed Soho hangout, the recession-stressed break it down to eclectic beats and nostalgia-inducing tunes—like at the Smiths party on Sundays. If that’s not enough to alleviate the tension, try Monday night’s hip-hop and dancehall fest hosted by Roxy Cottontail, and ride out the subsequent hangover with a “sick day” on Tuesday. 305 Spring St between Greenwich and Hudson Sts (212-620-5220, swaylounge.com). Average drink: $9.
West Side Story is now in previews; it opens Mar 19 (broadwaywestsidestory.com).
West Side Story In alphabetical order: George Akram, Joshua Buscher, Isaac Calpito, Kyle Coffman, Lindsay Dunn, Yurel Echezarreta, Cody Green, Manuel Herrera, Curtis Holbrook, Danielle Polanco, Amy Ryerson, Tanairi Sade Vazquez
