Seven-year scratch
Seven years after the close of the Boss Prize exhibit (and the winning of the prize by former J.Crew model Matthew Barney), Thomas Krens floats the idea of a Cai Guo-Qiang solo show. “Along the way I had seen Cai’s major piece at the Venice Biennale, and I had followed his installation career and his explosive pieces in New York and Washington and China and Japan," Krens tells TONY. "I felt it was time to set a date for a major retrospective.” Krens's plan is later approved at an exhibition committee meeting uptown.
