Bobby Berk Home
If you have a bed and are under the age of 65, this is the linen shop for you. Any flower or paisley patterns stocked here are of the modern variety and definitely won’t make you feel like you’re hopping into bed at your granny’s house. The shop also carries higher-end brands such as DwellStudio, Nancy Koltes and Amenity Home—with prices to match (think ballpark $259 for a full sheet set). But don’t despair: There are sales throughout the year, including two big sample ones (once in February and once in the summer) during which items are marked down by 70 percent. 59 Crosby St between Broome and Spring Sts (866-965-9793, bobbyberkhome.com)
Kmart
Most New Yorkers we know only go to this superstore for toiletries and ugly-sweater holiday party costumes, but it may be time to expand our horizons. After all, Martha Stewart’s bed and bath wares are sold here exclusively. Entire sheet sets regularly start at $24, and she doesn’t sacrifice quality for price—just feel her 400-thread-count pillowcases for proof. But act quickly before the line is discontinued come January and replaced by Country Living magazine’s collection. 250 W 34th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves (212-760-1188, kmart.com) • 770 Broadway at Astor Place (212-673-1540)
Laytner’s Linen & Home
This family-owned-and-operated store has survived two generations and 45 years of business, so it must be doing something right. Laytner’s stocks, in addition to furniture, housewares and table linens, the gamut of bed gear: high-thread-count cotton sheets, complete sheet sets, goose-down comforters, duvets and more. Pick up staples like a down-alternative mattress pad ($39.95) or a pleated bed skirt (from $49.95), and treat yourself to something soothing—like a knockout set of 1,000-thread-count Egyptian-cotton sateen sheets ($79.95). 2270 Broadway at 82nd St (212-724-0180, laytners.com) • 237 E 86th St between Second and Third Aves (212-996-4439)
Roberta Roller Rabbit
Despite the bright, energetic colors that fill this Upper East Side boutique, you’ll feel the urge to nap immediately upon entry. We blame designer Roberta Freymann for picking such incredible textiles—they’re all so damn soft and inviting! Choose from an array of 100-percent-cotton handmade quilts (starting at $125) in blues, greens, oranges, pinks and more. Be sure to pick up some jammies on your way out—tunic-style ($70) or top-and-bottom sets ($85)—made with matching fabrics. 1019 Lexington Ave at 73rd St (212-772-7200, robertarollerrabbit.com)
Stella
Would you put a price on a good night’s sleep? We didn’t think so, and that’s why we recommend this high-end Tribeca outpost, which carries luxury brands including SDH, Leitner and Dea. Among shop owner Mischelle Arcus’s favorite pieces: an Albarca duvet by Leitner ($1,020 for a queen size) and Chez M’Lain 600-thread-count hand-embroidered sheets ($800–$900 per set). There are less-expensive options, including a $250 set of Grand Hotel sheets, and Arcus points out that everything in her store is durable and machine-washable. “Most of my customers are young couples with children or pets,” she says. “They need bedding that will withstand use.” Plus, she only stocks items made under fair-labor conditions, so there’s no guilty conscience to keep you up at night. 138 West Broadway between Duane and Thomas Sts (212-233-9610, stellastore.com)
