SUNSET PARK
PROS
“It’s the highest point in Brooklyn, so you have fresh air from the bay, and the area is so green and residential,” says Katherine Chec, who has lived here for almost 17 years. The area is also home to Brooklyn’s Chinatown, which overtakes Eighth Avenue with its raucous pace and exotic produce. Says Chec, “Sunset Park is sort of a forgotten gem.”
CONS
“[There are] not enough service spots, like hair salons and things,” Chec says. Resident Ryan Quinn adds that city projects seem to drag on much longer than in other parts of town. “They’ve been doing work on the same ten blocks of Fifth Avenue for well over a year,” he says.
CHANCE IT WILL REALLY BE THE NEXT HOT NABE
In spring of 2008, we highlighted this area’s cheap rent, and New Yorkers caught on. “Prices have gone up at least 15 percent [since last year],” says Luke Constantino, a broker for RE/MAX at the Slope. “But I’m seeing more and more interest in the area due to high prices in Park Slope. So young professionals are buying and renting close to the border of Sunset Park.”
RECENT LISTINGS
A three-bedroom with a terrace and eat-in kitchen rents for $1,750 a month; a two-bedroom in a four-family house three blocks from the D train is going for $1,625; and a one-bedroom with hardwood floors is $1,175.

Although Jackson Heights may lack public green space, there are many private interior gardens in there historic pre-war co-ops. You can also go to Flushing Meadow park is just a short bike ride away via the 34th Avenue bike path which brings you to within blocks of the park. Jackson Heights has some of the most beautiful blocks in the entire city. The historic district is amazing. However, all the gardens people rant about are private and the city was planned without public parks, except for one that is 99% concrete. Also, the good food that everyone raves about is available at less than ok physical locations. My idea of a night out for dinner does not entail hopping from food cart to food cart. Someone needs to invest in that hood and open up a nice cafe!
Now is a good time to buy in Jackson Heights. Gorgeous apts, cheap, great transit access! Thumbs up.

I've lived peacefully in this area for over 20 years and i would LOVE for someone to show me any other neighborhoods in manhatthan that still feel like communities such as this area.Sure there is barely a nightlife there but there are some good bards and for those who feel like things are too ghettofied to venture, thanks for keeping New York City from being fun again!!
Inwood - 10 nice photos of Fort Tyron Park -why? To show the neighborhood you need to include the main stretches of Dyckman, Broadway and 207. It's busy ghetto retail for anyone who is wondering. Lots of fast food, hair salons and 99 cent store, not much else! Also on the cons, very accurate info but you must add that Inwood and Washington Heights have the most noise complaints in the entire city.
Again with Time Out and inaccurate photos of Inwood! What do they do, send a never-left-midtown intern from LA up to Inwood everytime they want photos? Inwood is NORTH of Dyckman, not south of it as the photos practically suggest. These photos are mostly of Fort George. Try shooting Seaman Ave around 204th to 218th St next time you want to show the Inwood that anyone reading TONY would actually move to.
By the way, Fort Tryon Park is NOT Inwood. It's the northern tip of Washington Heights, or what some like to call Hudson Heights.
