When Tony Elliott founded this magazine in London 40 years ago—with 70 pounds inhis pocket—he hardly thought he’d spawn editions in 26 cities worldwide (nor guidebooks for 50 destinations). The 21-year-old was just interested in what was cool—in the arts, at restaurants, in bars. Turns out, readers in New York were curious too—as were those in Chicago, Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Mumbai, Sydney and more. To celebrate the ever-expanding brand’s anniversary, each edition has named its Top 40 “heroes” in this week’s issue. Above, you’ll find a sampling of the coolest (and weirdest) worldwide. For pics and interviews with Keira Knightley, Billy Corgan, Salman Rushdie and everyone’s favorite, Amitabh Bachchan, plus many more.
