People we love
Quiz
Welcome, and no, you’re not crazy: It’s not actually Time Out New York’s 40th anniversary (we’re only 13). But to recognize our flagship publication’s big year—that’s right, London started in 1968—Time Outs around the world are celebrating with special issues devoted to the people they love.
Meet 40 New Yorkers who’ve made a positive impact on the city since TONY’s been around. Enjoy. Argue. And drink—this is a party, after all.
The New York 40:
From the archives
Really, TONY? I mean, REALLY? You couldn't find a more diverse and accurate representation of the people that contribute to the sexiness of this city? Shame on you.
What about Sean "Diddy" Combs!? He should definately be on this list.
While I appreciate the fact you want to group her into the Sex and the City pod, and that alone... she is so much more than that.
Where oh were is Sarah Jessica Parker? The person who's not only the richest woman in the city but made so many women fall in love with it?? How can we leave off someone who is half of New York's talent power couple? Clearly an oversight, eh? This is no list of 40 New Yorkers... this is a list of 40 people they pulled out of a hat, must be. I second that inadequate number of women comment.
No mention of the fabulous Rachel Maddox?
Hmmm, let's see. 25% women-how liberal. And Elliot Spitzter? And I still subscribe?
How do you write a cover story of 40 influential New Yorkers and only come up with one person of color on that list? Oh, did I forget about Jeter? Let's make that one and a half. What city are you representing? Certainly not the New York I and most of your NY 40 talk about, the city of vibrant multi-cultural diversity. Obviously there are thousands of people who could have been on this list. That's why we live here, because no other city in the world contains as many creative, intelligent, and unique individuals. How about Butch Morris, Ellen Stewart, Salman Rushdie, Rosie Perez, Al Sharpton, Raphael Montañez Ortiz, Bill T. Jones, Yoko Ono, Q-Tip, Sarah Jones, and that's just off the top of my head! That your writers and editors could have a production meeting without anyone saying "hey, everyone on this list is white, we should come up with some other names." is just beyond comprehension. It's embarrassing enough that it would even have to come to that point. Shame on you TONY, shame on all your writers and especially your editor for putting out a cover that reeks of narrow-mindedness, racism and ignorance.
In TONY's Derek Jeter description: ". . . chicks dig him." Um. . .NEWS FLASH, so do dudes. I'd bone him in a heartbeat. Just saying.
continuation of last comment : Nas is every good a rapper as Jay-Z, just different. He's the only New York rapper and rapper in general that can talk politics and social issues. And Jay - laughing when they ask you if Nas should have been included is so stupid. You KNOW he does. And Time Out, so should you. If you're going to include rappers in your list, its a shame to hip hop to leave out the best rapper alive (other than Jay)
I cannot believe that Jay-Z made the list and Nas didn't . Jay SHOULD be on that list, but Nas has equally every right to be there. Just b/c Illmatic came out in 94 doesn't really mean he hasn't done anything since. You guys stating that that his is only influential album is way off. Are you forgetting about IT WAS WRITTEN, or even I AM, what about being the first rapper to claim "hip hop is dead" w/that album...? And trying to name an album N***er is also quite different and important.
How do you leave Sean Combs or Angie Martinez off the list! In a city as diverse as New York your list reflects very little diversity
Do you mean the H.S. Spanish teacher who was on Univision? I agree!
I'm gonna go ahead and vote Edgar Morales into the top 40 list.
Peeps, you are not GETTING it. Don't go all John MccAin and JUST NOT GET IT! It's not about the 40 greatest NYers of all time - it's about 40 according to Timeout over the last 13 years or however long they've been around. Hello. Vote Obama so people get smarter.
wait, where's julia allison? she must be 41....
Adam Sandler! Or would that be too many SNL stars. Hmm. Top 40 New Yorkers. Martin Scorsese?
Jonathan Larson? Let's hope it's NOT Donald Trump . . .
I've got a guess for the 40th person: Jon Stewart
